Perimeter protection products are necessary to protect the users of railways and highways as well as members of the public who may otherwise be able to gain access to potentially dangerous areas. Many railways and highways pass through countryside where it is also necessary to restrict access by animals.

Railways operators tend to employ boundary fencing combined with swing gates. At railway / level crossing points operators utilise substantial boom barriers. Highways boundary fencing systems are increasingly incorporating acoustic fencing with noise reduction systems.
