EPPA members are structured to assist customers from the planning stage through to installation. As a result you can rest assured that you are making an informed decision regarding the selection and erection of your perimeter security measures. Expert advice will also serve to minimize the risk of specifying the wrong type of gate and the risk of causing injury to personnel or assets.
Establishing the right level of gate security entails implementing a set of measures that will reduce and hopefully eliminate the threat of wilful damage to a site or venue. However, in the interest of public safety, the risks imposed by the gate itself must be clearly documented. Therefore all contracts for the installation of gates should include full documentation, including the necessary information and instructions to ensure your product performs safely and reliably, throughout its design life.
The durability of metal gates heavily relies on proper installation and an effective inspection, maintenance and repair programme. Considerations to maximise performance of your gate include :
- Its surroundings
- Site lay-out
- Traffic flow
- Environmental influences
- Weather conditions
- Frequency of use
Once a gate has been installed, the owner is responsible for its operation. Therefore you should inform your supplier of any changes to its situation or usage. This is vital to ensure that the gate continues to function safely whilst providing a level of security that is suitable for your purpose.
Special attention should be paid to the retrofitting of a manual gate. When fitting a drive motor to an existing manually operated gate, the product becomes a ‘machine’ and will be subject to the legal liabilities set out in the EU Machinery Directive. The installer is responsible for fulfilling the product standards that apply to power operated gates, yet you should still be aware of the safety implications, as this can be a complex undertaking.
